AI Sewing Tip #4: Pattern Finder with an Image

This blog post is part of a series on ways to use AI as a useful tool and resource for sewing.

You can find patterns in many different ways.

Go to microsoft.copilot.com (or chatgpt or whatever platform you use).

Type the following prompt:

Find 5 pdf pants patterns to make these pants in the image. Upload an image of pants. I used these Magda pants that I made from cotton risha fabric.

This is what I got - a great selection of pattern options with detailed notes for each. It also included the link for easy access!

Add this prompt:

Create a comparison in a chart with an image or line drawing of each.

Here’s the complete comparison chart featuring each pants pattern. The line drawing preview got posted separately, styled in organic Risha cotton:

As you can see, it isn't perfect. The images didn't render properly in the chart, and then it created a partial chart with rendering. However, it certainly is clear enough to make an informed pattern search!

You can also ask for specifics.

Prompt ideas:
Find pdf pants patterns for stretch woven fabrics.
Find paper patterns for sale for knit pant-weight fabrics.
Find a free pdf pants pattern for linen pants.

The sky is the limit! Don't be afraid to try out prompts and revise as you do. Sometimes you will get answers that are bizarre - that just means that AI doesn't fully understand the assignment. I find that it sometimes helps if I ask questions as though I was speaking new to the english language. Be clear and concise, but be sure to include essential details. (fabric type, waistband type, length etc).

Have fun playing searching for new patterns. I have found some new-to-me companies and patterns this way. It really is fascinating and useful.
